Tung Chee-hwa receives state funeral in Hong Kong

Hong Kong held a state funeral for Tung Chee-hwa, the city’s first post-colonial chief executive, who died on September 8 at the age of 89. The ceremony, held at the Hong Kong Funeral Home in North Point, marks only the third time the city has granted such honors since the 1997 handover from Britain to China.

The funeral committee was chaired by Shi Taifeng, a senior member of the Chinese Communist Party Politburo. High-ranking officials in attendance included Xia Baolong, Beijing’s top official for Hong Kong and Macau affairs, as well as current chief executive John Lee and former chief executives Leung Chun-ying, Carrie Lam, and Donald Tsang.

Tung, a former shipping tycoon, served as chief executive from 1997 to 2005. His tenure was marked by significant challenges, including the 1997 Asian financial crisis, the 2003 SARS outbreak, and large-scale public protests regarding proposed national security legislation. The Chinese government described him as an outstanding contributor to the ‘one-country, two-systems’ framework.
