Hong Kong independent bookstores face threat from security laws

Independent bookstores in Hong Kong are facing significant pressure and closures following a series of arrests involving alleged sedition under a 2024 national security law. These shops have historically served as a refuge for readers, including those from mainland China, seeking political perspectives and information that diverge from official narratives.

Greenfield Book Store, a 50-year-old establishment, announced it would close at the end of its lease after being one of four bookstores targeted by police within a four-month period. Similarly, the bookstore Have A Nice Stay, founded by former journalists, announced its closure citing financial challenges and ‘elusive red lines,’ shortly before its booksellers were arrested.

Critics argue these developments are part of a broader crackdown on dissent following the 2020 security law, while authorities maintain that such laws are essential for maintaining stability.
