Hong Kong independent bookstore crackdown
Overview
Independent bookshops in Hong Kong are facing increasing pressure, police raids, and closures due to heightened control and the application of national security laws.
In earlier reports, authorities targeted specific retailers such as Hunter Bookstore, where the owner and another individual were arrested on charges of sedition and money laundering. Similarly, the owner and employees of Book Punch were arrested, with authorities reportedly seizing books related to jailed democracy campaigner Jimmy Lai.
As the situation progressed, more long-standing establishments announced closures. Greenfield Book Store, a 50-year-old business, decided to close at the end of its lease following a period where four bookstores were targeted by police. The bookstore Have A Nice Stay also announced its closure, citing financial challenges and ‘elusive red lines’ shortly before its booksellers were arrested.
While authorities maintain that these security laws are essential for maintaining stability, critics and rights groups argue the actions represent a crackdown on dissent and a significant curtailment of free speech.
