Hong Kong MPF posts $98bn gains as gold ETF rules expand

In July 2026 the Mandatory Provident Fund (MPF) system delivered a 0.54% investment gain of about US$9 billion, raising year‑to‑date earnings to US$97.7 billion and pushing total assets to roughly US$1.68 trillion. The average MPF account balance reached US$350,123 for the scheme’s 4.79 million members.

On 7 July 2026 the Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority revised its Guidelines to allow categorical approval of Gold Exchange‑Traded Funds. Eligible Gold ETFs must be listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, hold physical gold as the main asset, and not be classified as derivative funds. The change keeps the existing 10% aggregate investment cap but broadens the range of Gold ETFs that MPF funds can hold, aiming to diversify portfolios and support Hong Kong’s ambition to become a regional gold‑reserve hub.
