Hong Kong MPF posts July loss of HK$2,392 per member, YTD gain remains 4.95%

The Mandatory Provident Fund (MPF) in Hong Kong is projected to record a July return of –0.69%, equating to a monthly loss of about HK$11.5 billion. Across its 4.79 million members, the average loss per account for the month is estimated at HK$2,392.

Despite the monthly decline, year‑to‑date figures remain strong: total MPF investment earnings have reached roughly HK$77.2 billion, giving an average gain of HK$16,102 per member and an average account balance of about HK$345,856. Total MPF assets are expected to end July at approximately HK$1.658 trillion.

Discretionary Investment Scheme (DIS) funds continue to attract substantial inflows, accounting for about 40% of net MPF contributions this year. Hong Kong and China equities posted the best performance in July, rising around 2.96%, while other asset classes showed modest gains. Market sentiment is tempered by concerns over Middle‑East geopolitical uncertainty and high tech‑sector valuations.
