Hong Kong police crack down on illegal activities in Tai Po and Sheung Shui
Hong Kong police, in collaboration with the Immigration Department and Fire Services Department, conducted a two-week multi-agency operation codenamed ‘Operation Tide Break’ (斷潮) between October 17 and October 28. The crackdown targeted illegal gambling, prostitution, and unauthorized fuel stations in the Tai Po and Sheung Shui districts.
The operation resulted in the arrest of 90 individuals, including 24 mainland Chinese nationals. Among those detained were 18 men and 72 women, ranging in age from 21 to 88. Charges include operating illegal casinos, gambling, and breaching stay conditions. To date, 62 individuals have been prosecuted, while others remain on bail.
Authorities dismantled six illegal gambling dens controlled by triads, including baccarat, mahjong, and fishing machine venues. Additionally, undercover officers infiltrated four prostitution sites in tenement buildings, leading to the arrest of 12 women suspected of violating stay conditions.
In a separate strike against illegal fuel operations, officers discovered an unauthorized petrol station on Ma Shek Road in Sheung Shui. Police seized approximately 977 liters of diesel, valued at roughly 37,000 HKD, and arrested a 31-year-old local man with alleged triad connections for violating fire safety and dangerous goods regulations.
