Hong Kong Wang Fuk Court Fire Tragedy Exposes Safety Lapses

A blaze that erupted on 26 November 2025 at the Wang Fuk Court residential estate in Tai Po, Hong Kong, killed 168 people and displaced thousands of residents. The fire spread rapidly through seven buildings during a major renovation, prompting a public inquiry.

The inquiry disclosed that substandard construction practices – including the use of non‑fire‑retardant scaffolding netting, wooden planks covering staircase windows, and falsified compliance inspections – enabled the fire’s swift spread. The main contractor Prestige Construction & Engineering Co. and its consultant Will Power Architects were accused of cutting corners and deceiving regulators. Committee counsel Victor Dawes criticised the government's reliance on an honour‑system oversight, calling the system’s failure a “collapse” that contributed to the disaster.

Separately, the commission released CCTV footage of firefighter Ho Wai‑ho’s final moments. Ho paused to assist mobility‑impaired residents, entered the wrong block, and became trapped on the 30th floor. Despite a Mayday call, he was found unconscious on the ground floor and later pronounced dead. The evidence showed he attempted to escape via a window and fell, highlighting hazardous conditions faced by rescuers.
