Portugal intercepts Hong‑Kong‑flagged container ship with five tonnes of cocaine
On 4 August 2026, Portuguese authorities began an operation around 04:00 that led to the interception of a Hong‑Kong‑flagged container ship about 640 nautical miles (1 185 km) off Lisbon. The ship was escorted to the port of Sines, where the Polícia Judiciária, the Navy and the Air Force seized roughly five tonnes of cocaine and detained three foreign individuals – an Indian crew member, an Italian and a Colombian.

Separately, more than two tonnes of cocaine linked to the same trafficking network washed ashore on Comporta beach in the Setúbal district, prompting a rapid police response. The seizure brings Portugal’s total cocaine confiscations in 2026 to about 28 tonnes, surpassing the 2025 total.
