Portugal police drug busts & counterfeit meds July 2026

Entities: Public Security Police (PSP) · Santarém · Portugal

Overview

Portugal’s July 2026 law‑enforcement campaign continued to pressure drug trafficking, road‑safety violations and counterfeit medicines. After the high‑speed vessel interception off Olhão on 11 July, GNR and PSP expanded inland actions, seizing hundreds of doses of MDMA, cocaine, heroin and other substances, along with firearms, cash and motorcycles. A broader GNR sweep from 10‑16 July detained 517 individuals and seized roughly 16 600 cocaine doses, 1 900 hashish doses, 730 heroin doses, 19 firearms, 20 knives and €4 149 in cash, while Customs and health authorities confiscated 276 000 counterfeit medicines valued at €27.6 million.

The operation’s focus on synthetic drugs was reinforced on 18 July when the Portuguese Judicial Police (PJ) detained a 22‑year‑old foreign national at Lisbon Airport. Police recovered 250 g of high‑purity MDMA (about 2,416 doses), 989 MDMA tablets, 900 g of N‑ethyl‑pentedrone and 2.5 kg of ketamine concealed in the passenger’s luggage, intended for sale at a music festival.

A day later, on 19 July, the PJ’s National Unit for Combatting Drug Trafficking (UNCTE) intercepted a 22‑year‑old Israeli citizen at Humberto Delgado Airport with an identical cache of synthetic substances slated for the ZNA Gathering electronic‑music festival in Montargil. The suspect was detained and placed under investigation by Lisbon’s DIAP and UNCTE. These airport seizures underscore the multi‑agency effort to curb illicit drug inflows, especially ahead of large public events, while the broader campaign against narcotics and counterfeit medicines proceeds throughout July 2026.
