Hong Ngoc 37 bakery fined and ordered to pay medical costs after mass poisoning
The Dong Thap Provincial People's Committee has issued penalties against the Hong Ngoc 37 bakery business following a mass food poisoning incident that affected 352 people. The business owner, Nguyen Tan Tai, faces a total administrative fine of 94 million VND ($3,650) for two violations: failing to provide hygienic waste collection tools and selling food that caused poisoning to five or more people without reaching the threshold for criminal prosecution.
In addition to the fines, the establishment is suspended from all food sales activities for four months. The business is also legally required to cover nearly 1.1 billion VND ($42,000) in medical examination and treatment costs for the 352 victims. The payment must be completed within 30 days of receiving the decision.
The incident occurred in June 2026, when consumers reported symptoms including abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, and fatigue after consuming meat sandwiches containing ingredients such as pork, pate, and sausages. Laboratory tests conducted by the Pasteur Institute in Ho Chi Minh City confirmed that 25 out of 36 clinical samples tested positive for Salmonella sp. No fatalities were reported.
