Mass food poisoning incidents in Vietnam

Overview

In June 2026, a mass food poisoning incident occurred in Dong Thap involving 352 victims who consumed meat sandwiches containing pork, pate, and sausages. Victims reported symptoms such as abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, and fatigue. Laboratory testing by the Pasteur Institute in Ho Chi Minh City confirmed that 25 out of 36 clinical samples tested positive for ‘Salmonella sp.’ No fatalities were reported.

Following the incident, the Dong Thap Provincial People's Committee penalized the Hong Ngoc 37 bakery. The owner, Nguyen Tan Tai, was issued an administrative fine of 94 million VND for hygiene violations and selling food that caused poisoning. The business was suspended from food sales for four months and ordered to pay approximately 1.1 billion VND in medical costs for the victims.

Separately, in October 2026, authorities in Quang Ngai province investigated a suspected mass food poisoning incident in Cam Thanh ward linked to bread consumed at a street food stall. The Quang Ngai Department of Health reported that 167 patients were hospitalized, including 41 pediatric patients and three pregnant women. Symptoms included abdominal pain, nausea, and diarrhea. The Quang Ngai Center for Disease Control collected food and clinical samples for laboratory testing to determine the cause.
