Hoolock Gibbon conservation training held for three Indian states

A week-long residential training programme focused on the conservation of the Western Hoolock Gibbon recently concluded at the Gibbon Conservation Centre in the Hollongapar Gibbon Sanctuary, Assam. The initiative brought together 15 forest guards from the states of Assam, Meghalaya, and Nagaland, marking the first time frontline staff from these three northeastern Indian states have participated in a joint training dedicated to this species.

Organized by the biodiversity conservation organization Aaranyak in collaboration with the Jorhat Forest Division and the Assam Forest Department, the programme received support from the Habitats Trust and the IUCN Primate Specialist Group. The training aimed to address threats facing India’s only ape, including poaching, habitat fragmentation, and encroachment.

The curriculum combined classroom instruction with field exercises, covering topics such as primate census, population estimation, habitat restoration, rescue and rehabilitation, GPS usage, and wildlife laws.
