Hoolock Gibbon conservation in Northeast India
Overview
Conservation efforts for the Western Hoolock Gibbon, India’s only native ape species, have focused on training and habitat mitigation in Northeast India.
In late September 2026, a joint training programme was conducted at the Hollongapar Gibbon Sanctuary in Assam. The initiative brought together forest guards from Assam, Meghalaya, and Nagaland to address threats such as poaching, habitat fragmentation, and encroachment through instruction in primate census, habitat restoration, and wildlife laws.
By late October 2026, conservation activities expanded to include the implementation of canopy bridges in Assam. These structures allow the arboreal primates to cross railway tracks safely within the tree canopy. Alongside these technical measures, government and non-profit organizations held educational seminars and community plantation drives to address habitat loss caused by infrastructure and tea estates.
