Hosepipe ban imposed in Cornwall and Devon as drought worsens

The Environment Agency has declared a flash drought across the South West and a hosepipe ban is being introduced for households in Cornwall and Devon from Saturday, 8 August. Record‑breaking temperatures above 35 °C and low rainfall have left the land, flora and fauna severely parched, prompting concerns from farmers about crop and livestock productivity.

The Eden Project, a charity and visitor attraction near St Austell, is using the crisis to raise awareness of water‑saving measures. Chief executive Andy Jasper highlighted the site's own water‑saving practices, noting that two‑thirds of its water needs are met on‑site through groundwater and rain‑water collection. Head of regenerative sustainability Charles Sainsbury added that the Eden Project’s Mediterranean biome demonstrates how plants can thrive in hotter, drier conditions.

The organisation urges the public to adapt water use and consider longer‑term climate resilience.
