Healthcare systems in Peru and Ecuador face infrastructure crises and digital shifts

Public health systems in Peru and Ecuador are facing significant challenges and transformations. In Peru, multiple hospital facilities are under scrutiny due to critical infrastructure and equipment failures. The Hospital Antonio Lorena in Cusco is facing renewed delays, with a new delivery date set for November 8. In Andahuaylas, inspections revealed overcrowding, structural cracks, and a severe shortage of functional mechanical ventilators. Similarly, the Carlos Monge Medrano Hospital in Juliaca is struggling with insufficient space, leading to emergency patients being treated in hallways, while the Hospital de Barranca-Cajatambo reports deteriorated furniture and procurement irregularities. In Pisco, patients at Hospital San Juan de Dios are demanding solutions for broken medical equipment and supply shortages. In response to these regional crises, the Minister of Health is scheduled to visit Ucayali to evaluate local sanitary conditions.

In contrast, the Ecuadorian Social Security Institute (IESS) has launched a modernization initiative. The institute is implementing teletriage and telemedicine services to decongest high-level specialty hospitals. This program, piloted at the José Carrasco Arteaga Hospital, aims to redirect patients with minor ailments to primary or secondary care levels, utilizing remote consultations to improve efficiency and reduce hospital crowding.
