Hospital del Sur in Choluteca reallocates pediatric ward to treat dengue surge

Hospital del Sur in the Choluteca department of Honduras announced a reorganization of its pediatric ward to give priority to children with severe dengue as cases rise sharply. Dr. José Osorto, head of epidemiological surveillance for the region, explained that the ward, normally treating various infections, will be dedicated mainly to dengue patients, while other pediatric services such as orthopedics and surgery will be transferred to a mobile hospital to free up space.

Municipal authorities are preparing to declare an emergency after the epidemiological alert curve was exceeded. Two children have died from dengue in Choluteca, and a 14‑year‑old’s death is under investigation for possible dengue involvement. Health officials urged residents to eliminate mosquito breeding sites, cooperate with fumigation efforts, and seek prompt medical care for warning signs.
