Hospital expansion projects underway in Gijón and León, Spain

The Asturias health ministry unveiled a revised plan to enlarge the Cabueñes Hospital in Gijón. The new design adds an extra plant, reconfigures public space, creates more day‑hospital capacity, rooftop terraces and raises questions about underground parking. The tender is scheduled for September, the contract award for March next year, with construction slated to start between April and May and completion targeted for the end of 2029. The project follows a troubled history: a failed 2021 tender, a rescinded contract and ongoing litigation after earlier works were halted.

In León, heavy excavators have begun work at the University Hospital Complex to add 16 critical‑care beds at a cost exceeding €6 million. The upgrade will raise intensive‑care and resuscitation unit capacity from 28 to 44 beds. Work started on 21 July, with the site fenced off and 50 parking spaces removed. Demolition of the ground‑floor roof is underway, and the construction will proceed in two phases to keep hospital services running, first expanding the new Resuscitation Unit (REA) and later the Intensive Care Unit (UCI).
