Spain hospital expansion projects

In late July 2026, Spanish authorities began finalising land transfers in the north‑west region to support both public‑housing construction and the enlargement of the Cabueñes Hospital in Gijón. The state‑owned asset manager Sarec met with local officials to arrange the free hand‑over of parcels for 289 housing units in Moaña and a 5,000 m² site in Gijón that will enable the hospital’s expansion and new access roads, with the transfer expected before year‑end.

A week later, the Asturias health ministry released a revised, detailed plan for the Cabueñes Hospital upgrade, adding a new floor, reconfigured public spaces, rooftop terraces and underground parking. The tender is slated for September, contract award in March 2027, and construction to begin between April and May 2027, aiming for completion by the end of 2029. The announcement also highlighted a parallel project in León, where excavation work started at the University Hospital Complex to add 16 critical‑care beds, expanding intensive‑care capacity from 28 to 44 beds. The León upgrade proceeds in two phases to keep services running while construction advances.
