Hospital General de México reports Salmonella outbreak affecting 135 doctors
The Hospital General de México Dr. Eduardo Liceaga has reported an acute infectious gastroenteritis outbreak affecting 135 medical residents and specialists. The outbreak, first identified on August 31, is temporarily associated with the consumption of food from the hospital’s outsourced institutional dining service.
Laboratory tests have confirmed the presence of Salmonella spp. in the analyzed cases, with two instances of co-infection involving enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC). As of September 3, 41 individuals remain hospitalized for treatment and monitoring, though all are reported to be in stable condition. Symptoms reported include abdominal pain, diarrhea, fever, and vomiting.
In response, the hospital has immediately suspended the outsourced dining service for residents and activated an epidemiological strategy to track potentially exposed individuals. The UNAM Faculty of Medicine is also coordinating with hospital authorities to monitor the health of its postgraduate students and residents affected by the incident.
