Salmonella outbreak and resident protests at Hospital GM

Overview

An acute Salmonella outbreak at the Hospital General de México Dr. Eduardo Liceaga has significantly impacted medical residents and specialists. While health authorities initially reported approximately 135 to 145 affected individuals, with 41 requiring hospitalization, medical staff and resident representatives claim the scale is much larger. Protesters allege up to 277 infections, including 67 hospitalizations and 15 patients in intensive care due to complications such as kidney damage.

The outbreak, detected around August 31, is suspected to have originated from eggs provided by the outsourced catering service, Restaurantes Grogi SA de CV. In response, the dining hall was closed on September 1, and the Internal Control Body (OIC) of the Ministry of Health launched an investigation into the administrative responsibilities of public officials and the private contractor. Additionally, the Ministry of Anticorruption and Good Government has opened an inquiry.

Following protests and road blockades by residents, hospital authorities reached an agreement on September 7 to reimburse medical residents for expenses related to medications and essential supplies. Residents also cited long-standing facility issues, such as inconsistent water supply, during their demonstrations. To prevent further incidents, the federal Ministry of Health has ordered urgent hygiene and sanitary inspections of food services across various public health institutions, including IMSS, ISSSTE, IMSS-Bienestar, and Pemex.
