Hospital Ludovicense in São Luís partially closed after MP‑ordered health inspection

The Ministry of Public of Maranhão carried out an inspection of Hospital Ludovicense (formerly Clínica São Marcos) in São Luís after complaints about its obstetrics service. Teams from the MP, municipal health surveillance, the fire department and other agencies examined the facility.

Inspectors found multiple deficiencies on the first floor, including mold‑infested walls and leaks in the neonatal intensive care unit, structural problems in surgical rooms, lack of oxygen in the post‑operative recovery area, and deficiencies in the sterilisation and storage areas. The entire first floor, comprising the operating theatre, material‑sterilisation centre, deposits and the neonatal ICU, was ordered shut. The fire brigade also identified fire‑safety violations, and the evacuation route on the fourth floor did not meet technical standards, leading to its full closure.

Investigators observed a large quantity of infectious hospital waste stored in an unsecured external area, posing a sanitary risk to the public. In the hospital pharmacy, officials noted missing documentation required by the regional pharmacy council for medication purchases, resulting in its interdiction. Only ground‑floor consultation rooms remain operational, while the closed sectors will stay shut until the cited irregularities are remedied.
