Brazil municipalities implement measures to expand healthcare and reduce waiting lists

Various Brazilian municipalities are implementing measures to address healthcare demands and reduce medical waiting lists.

In Natal, the São Padre Pio Municipal Hospital has opened 17 adult medical ward beds to reduce congestion in emergency units. The facility, which previously focused on pediatric care and diagnostics, is gradually expanding its capacity to include intensive care and mental health services.

In Porto Velho, the newly inaugurated Municipal University Hospital has begun providing specialized services in ophthalmology, orthopedics, and cardiology, offering relief to patients who had been waiting years for treatment.

In Mariana, the local government has contracted a specialist to perform breast surgeries at Hospital Monsenhor Horta, aiming to clear a backlog of 45 women awaiting procedures such as biopsies and tumor removals.

Conversely, Poços de Caldas faces significant challenges, with the Municipal Health Secretariat reporting that 23,910 patients are currently on waiting lists for specialized consultations. High demand is noted in dermatology, ophthalmology, and neurology, though officials stated they lack an integrated digital tool to calculate precise average waiting times.
