Porto Velho University Hospital SUS service implementation

Overview

In late September 2026, the University Hospital (HU) in Porto Velho began providing services through the Unified Health System (SUS). This initiative was established via a cooperation agreement between the Federal University of Rondônia (UNIR), the Porto Velho Municipal Health Secretariat (Semusa), and the Brazilian Agency for Support to SUS Management (AgSUS).

Initial services focused on ophthalmology, cardiology, and orthopedics consultations, alongside diagnostic imaging and low-complexity elective surgeries. Access to the hospital requires a referral through a Municipal Basic Health Unit (UBS) via the Semusa regulation system, with staffing supported by the federal ‘Agora tem Especialistas’ program.

By early October, the hospital had successfully transitioned into active operations, conducting hundreds of appointments. The facility aims to reduce significant public health backlogs, including a demand of over 12,000 patients awaiting orthopedic care, while integrating academic training through UNIR. As of October 5, the newly inaugurated Municipal University Hospital is reported to be providing these specialized services, offering relief to patients who had been waiting years for treatment.
