Hospitality graduates in China deterred by occupational stigma
Research published in the International Journal of Environment and Sustainable Development indicates that occupational stigma is driving many Chinese hospitality graduates away from the industry. A study involving more than 300 hotel interns found that negative perceptions regarding social status, working conditions, and career value significantly impact whether graduates pursue long-term roles in hospitality.
While universities produce a high volume of hospitality and tourism graduates, estimates suggest only 10% to 20% eventually enter the field. The study suggests that internships, intended to bridge this gap, may inadvertently reinforce negative attitudes if students encounter work they perceive as low-status or unattractive. However, researchers noted that developing stronger vocational skills may help protect young workers from these negative perceptions.
