Hospitality industry workforce and perception challenges
Overview
The hospitality industry is facing workforce challenges driven by negative perceptions and social stigma surrounding younger workers and the nature of the work.
In Germany and Austria, tensions have emerged regarding Generation Z employees. Some employers characterize these workers as lacking resilience or being ‘lazy’ due to a focus on work-life balance. However, observers suggest these stereotypes may serve to deflect from the need for businesses to modernize management practices and address structural industry challenges.
In China, research indicates that occupational stigma is a significant factor deterring hospitality graduates from entering the field. A study of hotel interns found that negative views regarding social status, career value, and working conditions contribute to a situation where only an estimated 10% to 20% of graduates pursue long-term roles in the sector. While internships are meant to bridge the gap between education and employment, they may inadvertently reinforce these negative attitudes if the work is perceived as low-status.
