Department of Justice settles with six hospitals to end gender transition treatments for minors
The U.S. Department of Justice has reached settlements with at least six major hospitals to end the provision of gender transition treatments, including puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, and surgical procedures for minors.
Among the institutions involved are NYU Langone Health, which agreed to an $8.5 million settlement, and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, which agreed to pay $950,000. Other hospitals included in the agreements are Texas Children’s Hospital, Cleveland Clinic, Connecticut Children’s Medical Center, and Mount Sinai Health System. While the hospitals agreed to pay fines and cease these practices, they admitted to no wrongdoing.
As part of the individual agreements, some hospitals will provide free medical care to former patients who wish to detransition. The settlements have drawn significant reactions: opponents of the treatments praised the DOJ’s actions as protective of children, while transgender activists and LGBTQ+ advocates held protests, such as a demonstration outside NYU Langone, to oppose the cessation of gender-affirming care services.
