Overview

The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has expanded its efforts to restrict pediatric gender-affirming care through a series of settlements with major medical institutions. Following agreements with Connecticut Children’s Medical Center, the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, and Texas Children’s Hospital, the Mount Sinai Health System reached a settlement with the DOJ and the Department of Health and Human Services. Similarly, NYU Langone Health and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center have now reached settlements with the DOJ to end gender-affirming care for minors. NYU Langone will pay $8.5 million, and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center will pay $950,000. Both institutions maintained they did not admit to wrongdoing, citing a desire to avoid prolonged litigation and subpoenas for sensitive medical records. These settlements follow DOJ investigations into whether providers engaged in “fraudulent billing practices” to obtain payments from federal and private insurers. Attorney General Todd Blanche stated the DOJ is “fighting to protect our nation’s children.” Collectively, at least six major hospitals—including NYU Langone, UPMC, Texas Children’s, Cleveland Clinic, Connecticut Children’s, and Mount Sinai—have agreed to cease providing puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, and related surgical procedures to patients under 18. Several hospitals have also committed to providing free medical care to former patients who wish to detransition.
