House spiders become more visible during autumn mating season

During late summer and autumn, an increase in sightings of large house spiders is attributed to mating season. Mature male spiders become significantly more active during this period as they wander in search of females.

Experts note that these spiders are often already living within or around buildings, inhabiting undisturbed areas such as garages, lofts, cellars, and closets. They become more visible when males follow chemical cues, such as silk, to locate females. While the sudden appearance of large, long-legged spiders can be unsettling, scientists clarify that they are not being newly lured into homes in large numbers, but are instead moving from dark, quiet corners into more open spaces like floors and bathrooms to complete their life cycle.
