Household hazards can damage lungs more than cigarette smoke

Medical experts are warning about common household elements that can cause significant respiratory damage, potentially exceeding the risks posed by cigarette smoke or outdoor pollution.

One major concern is oil smoke generated during high-temperature cooking. This smoke contains volatile organic compounds and fine particulate matter (PM2.5), which can lead to airway inflammation, exacerbate asthma or COPD, and increase lung cancer risks. Dr. Liu Yufei of Jiangsu Cancer Hospital recommends using ventilation, such as exhaust fans or open windows, and prioritizing steaming or boiling over frying.

Additionally, household mold poses a serious threat. Dr. Qiao Guibin of Zhujiang Hospital notes that even mold invisible to the naked eye can release airborne spores. Inhaling these spores can trigger allergic pneumonia and other respiratory issues.
