Household wealth and savings trends in the Netherlands and Belgium

Recent financial reports highlight varying levels of household wealth and savings in the Netherlands and Belgium.

In the Netherlands, as of January 1, 2024, the average Dutch household held €54,700 in bank and savings balances. However, this average is skewed by high-wealth households; the median figure is significantly lower, with half of all households possessing less than €21,500. Data from De Nederlandsche Bank shows total household bank balances reached €600.5 billion by the end of 2024. Age plays a major role in these buffers: the median savings for the 25-34 age group was approximately €9,800, while the 45-55 age group saw a median of €23,300.

In Belgium, the 2026 Wealth Report by Keytrade Bank and Ghent University indicates that a household requires a net wealth of €995,000 to enter the top 10% of the country. This threshold is more than three times higher than the median net wealth of Belgian households, which stands at €286,250. Net wealth is calculated as the total value of all assets, including real estate and investments, minus all debts such as mortgages and personal loans.
