Housing authorities advance property ownership in Barbados and South Africa

In Barbados, the National Housing Corporation (NHC) has reported progress in its housing initiatives, with nearly 500 families receiving homes through the first two phases of distribution. Under the State (Acquisition and Vesting of Property) Act passed in May, approximately 3,892 long-term tenants are slated to become homeowners. This legislation aims to resolve administrative delays for residents in areas including Deacons Farm, Grazettes, Fernihurst, and several others. NHC General Manager Ian Gill noted that the Twenty-Year Programme allows residents who have occupied rental properties for at least two decades to receive full legal ownership.

In South Africa, the City of Cape Town recently distributed title deeds to 65 homeowners in Heideveld as part of the ‘Housing the City Tour’ initiative. This program brings housing services directly into communities to assist with affordable housing applications, rental matters, and maintenance queries. The handover of title deeds provides residents with legal property ownership and greater financial security. Additionally, city officials are conducting maintenance and upgrades on Community Residential Units, including repairs to plumbing, roofing, and carpentry.
