Housing crisis and aid programs in Catalonia
In Sant Cugat, local organizations at the 51st Festa de Tardor have issued a manifesto warning that the escalating cost of housing threatens the city's community and social fabric. The groups argue that rising prices for buying and renting are forcing residents to leave, particularly families who must dedicate an excessive portion of their income to housing costs. They are calling for government intervention, including rent price regulation, an increase in public housing stock, limits on real estate speculation, and restrictions on tourist apartments.
Meanwhile, the Catalan government's ‘Préstecs Emancipació’ program is showing results in assisting first-time buyers. Since its launch in June 2025, the program has facilitated the purchase of over 2,000 homes with more than 76 million euros in loans. The initiative provides interest-free public loans of up to 50,000 euros to help residents cover the down payment that banks typically do not finance. While the program has helped many young people, participants must accept that the properties will remain protected under specific housing regulations.
