Housing eviction protests sweep Catalonia as families face forced removals

In Girona, the Housing Union reports that eighteen families in the Sant Narcís neighbourhood remain under threat of eviction by the state‑owned asset manager Saree. The court set a deadline for the evictions on Thursday, and the families say they have received no mediation, no alternative housing and live in total uncertainty. They highlight that dozens of empty apartments exist in the same blocks while vulnerable households, including minors, await possible removal.

In Barcelona, the PAH, COSHAC and the Socialist Housing Union occupied city hall to denounce a sharp rise in evictions and a drastic cut to temporary emergency housing (ATU) after a change in municipal policy. Activists point to a 64.5% drop in public housing construction, an 80% fall in purchases for social rental, and a 43% increase in homelessness. They demand the declaration of a housing emergency, a ban on evictions, expropriation of vacant homes and swift rehousing for those displaced.
