Housing market trends show rising challenges for homeowners and younger buyers

Global housing trends indicate increasing challenges for homeowners and prospective buyers. In India, the long-term commitment of home loans, often spanning 20 to 30 years, requires significant financial planning. Experts suggest maintaining a reserve of three to six months of Equated Monthly Instalments (EMIs) to mitigate risks from job volatility, inflation, and interest rate fluctuations.

In the United States, younger generations are experiencing lower homeownership rates compared to previous cohorts. Data from Redfin and Apartment List shows that Gen Z and Millennials are falling behind the historical curve due to high home prices and elevated mortgage rates. For example, only 38.3% of 28-year-old Gen Zers were homeowners in 2025, compared to 42.5% of Gen X at the same age. While homeownership rates for Gen Z and Millennials showed slight increases in 2025, the overall progress remains measured.
