Portugal police dismantle housing protest camps in Lisbon and Porto

Portuguese police conducted simultaneous operations in the early hours of Sunday to dismantle housing protest camps in Lisbon and Porto. The interventions targeted demonstrators occupying public spaces, such as Rossio Square in Lisbon and Praça D. João I in Porto, who had erected tents to protest the national housing crisis.

The Public Security Police (PSP) reported that 31 people were arrested for disobedience, including 25 in Lisbon and 6 in Porto. Official figures state that 11 people were injured during the operations, including three police officers. However, organizers of the protest camps have disputed these numbers, claiming that as many as 37 people were injured, some seriously.

The police stated the actions were necessary to restore public order and legality, noting that the occupation of public space without authorization violated regulations. In response, political figures and activists have criticized the use of force. While some leaders defended the police action as a necessary measure to maintain order, others, including members of the Left Bloc, described the intervention as “completely disproportionate.”
