Houston Mayor provides new car to student after police gunfire incident

Houston Mayor John Whitmire has provided a new Honda Civic to Abigail Trujillo, a University of Houston student whose vehicle was struck by police gunfire during an arrest attempt in July. The incident occurred at the Highland Village shopping center.

The new vehicle was funded by the mayor and anonymous donors, while the Houston Police Officers’ Union paid off the remaining balance on Trujillo’s original vehicle. This follows an initial denial of Trujillo’s claim for relief from the city.

Mayor Whitmire stated that the city’s legal department is currently reviewing nearly 400 property damage claims on file to determine if other individuals may qualify for similar compensation due to government actions.
