Houston police gunfire property damage dispute

Overview

In July, a University of Houston student, Abigail Trujillo, had her parked vehicle destroyed by police gunfire during an attempt to apprehend a suspect in a stolen vehicle. Although Trujillo was not accused of wrongdoing, Houston city attorneys initially denied her claim for compensation, stating they “regret your inconvenience.”

Following public scrutiny and a statement from Mayor John Whitmire that the city had “totally mishandled” the situation, the city moved to provide relief. Mayor Whitmire, supported by anonymous donors, provided Trujillo with a new Honda Civic, while the Houston Police Officers’ Union paid the remaining balance on her original vehicle. The city’s legal department is now reviewing approximately 400 other property damage claims to determine if further compensation is warranted for individuals affected by government actions.
