Houthi advances in Yemen trigger displacement and humanitarian crisis

Renewed violence in Yemen has triggered a wave of civilian displacement and intensified a growing humanitarian crisis. In the Jabal Habashi district of Taiz, Houthi rebels have launched advances into government-held areas, ending a four-year period of relative calm in the region.

The fighting has forced thousands of residents to flee rural villages for cities like Taiz. Many displaced individuals are now residing in overcrowded camps that lack sufficient access to food, healthcare, and sanitation.

The conflict has also impacted critical infrastructure, with war disrupting roads and port operations. This disruption follows a rapid Houthi advance in September, which saw the group take control of the Yemeni Red Sea coast and tighten their influence over the Bab al-Mandeb strait, a vital international shipping route. The combination of movement restrictions and damaged logistics is placing extreme pressure on already overstretched humanitarian services.
