Taiz faces humanitarian crisis amid Houthi siege and fighting
The city of Taiz in Yemen is facing a severe humanitarian crisis as Houthi forces maintain a blockade that has cut off essential supply routes to Aden for approximately 20 days. The United Nations has warned that the siege is preventing the entry of food, fuel, and medical supplies, leaving over 800,000 people without aid. Among those affected are an estimated 200,000 women and children.
Recent military escalations, including the government-led ‘Fajr Yemen’ operation, have intensified fighting in the Taiz governorate. The Yemeni Network for Rights and Freedoms documented 1,891 crimes and violations in the region between September 1 and October 22, 2026. These include the indiscriminate launch of approximately 9,876 projectiles, 314 cases of kidnapping and enforced disappearance, and the killing of at least 212 civilians, including 38 children.
Infrastructure is under extreme pressure; 42 health facilities report acute shortages of supplies, and water production has dropped by half as diesel for pumps becomes scarce. The conflict has also caused significant displacement, with estimates suggesting between 233,000 and 260,000 people have been uprooted by the recent surge in violence.
