Taiz conflict escalates as Houthi forces target residential areas
Military escalation has intensified in Yemen, particularly in the Taiz and Lahij governorates, as Houthi forces and Yemeni government troops engage in heavy combat. The Taiz Rights Center documented a series of Houthi attacks on residential areas, including the use of 120mm mortar shells in the Al-Mudhaffar district and ballistic missiles targeting Al-Turba. One missile reportedly struck a maternity and childcare center currently under construction.
On the battlefield, Yemeni government forces reported conducting 414 military operations over a 24-hour period, targeting Houthi positions, vehicles, and reinforcements in districts such as Al-Wazi'iyah, Al-Janad, and Hayfan. These operations included airstrikes and artillery fire aimed at neutralizing Houthi capabilities. Simultaneously, government forces successfully repelled Houthi infiltration attempts at strategic locations like Jabal Qarfan.
The conflict has resulted in civilian casualties and significant property damage. In the Jurdad Bani Omar area, Houthi shelling killed one citizen and injured others. Amidst the fighting, the Yemeni National Defense Council has warned civilians to stay away from military sites and Houthi weapon depots to avoid the risks posed by advanced weaponry, including Iranian-supported technologies.
