Houthi rebels claim shootdown of Saudi F-15 jet in Yemen
Fighting between the Saudi-led coalition and Houthi rebels in Yemen has intensified, marked by significant military claims and heightened regional tensions. Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree claimed that Houthi forces shot down a Saudi F-15 fighter jet over Marib province using a locally manufactured air-to-air missile. The group also reported shooting down a Saudi armed reconnaissance drone in the same region and intercepting Saudi fighter jets near Mocha.
In a separate escalation, Saudi Arabia reported intercepting and destroying a Houthi drone attempting to fly toward the holy city of Mecca. While the Saudi-led coalition described the incident as a cowardly terrorist attack and declared the security of holy sites a ‘red line,’ the Houthis denied targeting Mecca, asserting their operations focus on military and oil infrastructure.
Amidst these developments, Saudi Arabia has reportedly requested air-defense support from allies, including France, Pakistan, Egypt, and the United Kingdom, due to dwindling stocks of missile interceptors. The United States has reiterated support for Yemen’s internationally recognized government and has held direct talks with Houthi representatives in Oman, though officials have ruled out a direct military role in the conflict.
