Houthi forces expand Red Sea influence and target Saudi Arabia

The Houthi movement in Yemen has significantly expanded its territorial and military influence, recently seizing the port of Mocha on the Red Sea and attacking strategic islands near the Bab al-Mandeb strait. These advancements threaten the Suez-Red Sea shipping route, which accounts for approximately 12% of global trade. The group has utilized advanced ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and UAVs—supported by technical assistance from Iran and Hezbollah—to target Saudi Arabian oil facilities and infrastructure, including the East-West Pipeline.

In recent diplomatic developments mediated by Oman, Houthi leaders have provided security assurances to the United States and the European Union. They stated that their current military operations are specifically targeted at Saudi Arabia and do not intend to attack EU vessels or global international shipping corridors. Analysts suggest these assurances may allow the Houthi forces to focus their military resources on weakening Saudi Arabian economic and defense capabilities while attempting to avoid large-scale direct intervention from Western powers.
