Overview

The conflict has expanded into a multi-layered struggle involving internal power disputes, a regional proxy war between Saudi Arabia and Iran, and global energy security concerns. While Houthi leaders provided indirect diplomatic assurances via Oman that their operations target Saudi Arabia rather than European vessels, the group has evolved into a sophisticated force capable of disrupting Red Sea trade.

Military operations have intensified significantly through the Yemeni government’s ‘Operation Dawn of Yemen’ (also referred to as ‘Fajr al-Yemen’). This campaign, ongoing since October 5, 2026, aims to restore state institutions and regain control of Sanaa. The Presidential Leadership Council reports that since the operation began, the military has conducted over 40,000 targeting operations, resulting in the neutralization of approximately 20,000 personnel and the destruction of more than 5,000 vehicles.

As of early November 2026, the operation has entered its fifth month. In a single 24-hour period, military spokesperson Colonel Majed Al-Nazili reported that forces executed 1,298 targeting operations using air support, drones, and artillery, neutralizing 440 Houthi elements and destroying 132 vehicles and heavy weapons. Recent field developments include government and Popular Resistance forces seizing the Sanamat area in the Taiz governorate and repelling Houthi attempts to retake positions. In Al-Jawf, military engineering units are currently clearing liberated sites of mines and improvised explosive devices.

Amidst the fighting, the Yemeni Ministry of Interior reported a Houthi drone strike on a home in western Taiz that killed a woman and a child. The United Nations has warned that nearly 260,000 people have been displaced since August.
