Houthi militia forces eight Saudi oil tankers to reroute around Africa
The Houthi movement (Ansar Allah) announced that it forced eight Saudi oil tankers to change course and head toward the Cape of Good Hope, describing the action as part of a "blockade against blockade" strategy. Spokesperson Yahya Sarea said, "We forced eight Saudi oil tankers to change their route towards the Cape of Good Hope" and warned that the armed forces would strike the ships wherever possible.
Bloomberg tracking data showed six of the tankers taking a long detour around Africa, with two heading to Gibraltar and four to South African ports. The diversion adds roughly $10 per barrel to transport costs and delays deliveries by more than a month. Saudi authorities have not confirmed the claim.
Saudi Arabia’s defense ministry is hosting a multinational naval alliance meeting to discuss maritime security in the Red Sea and Bab al‑Mandab. The Houthi blockade, intensified since late July, raises concerns about broader regional conflict and the safety of global oil shipments.
