Yemen conflict escalates as government forces target Bab el-Mandeb

Saudi-backed Yemeni government forces have launched a major offensive, dubbed Operation Dawn of Yemen, to retake strategic territory along the Red Sea coast and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. Pro-government units, including the National Shield, Giants Brigades, and Tihama Resistance, claim to have captured the port city of Mokha and secured the Dhubab military airfield. However, conflicting reports from government and military sources suggest that forces may have only reached the outskirts of Mokha.

The Houthi movement has denied these territorial losses and responded by escalating attacks against Saudi Arabia, claiming to have struck Riyadh’s international airport and other military targets. The conflict has significant implications for global energy security, as the Bab el-Mandeb Strait is a critical maritime corridor; approximately 8.1 million barrels of oil per day passed through the waterway in the second quarter of 2026.

In response to the escalation, the Mecca defense pact has been activated, with Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan agreeing to deploy military forces to support the region. Additionally, discussions are reportedly underway regarding the potential deployment of Syrian troops to Yemen to bolster government forces.
