Yemen’s Houthi rebels have claimed responsibility for two drone strikes targeting Najran Airport and a Saudi Aramco facility in southern Saudi Arabia. Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree stated the operations were a response to Saudi drone incursions into the airspace of Yemen’s Saada province. Saudi authorities have not yet officially confirmed the attacks or reported specific damage.

The strikes occur amid an escalation of hostilities and a maritime blockade declared by the Houthis on July 20. The group claims to have attacked eight Saudi oil tankers since the blockade began, with five attacks in the Red Sea and three in the Gulf of Aden and Arabian Sea. Additionally, the Houthis claim to have prevented 48 Saudi tankers from transiting, forcing them to change course. These intercepted vessels include 34 in the Arabian Sea and Indian Ocean, and 14 in the Red Sea.

In parallel, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has warned that Saudi Arabia will be unable to contain the Houthi movement. The conflict follows the breakdown of a 2022 UN-mediated truce, with tensions rising due to recent strikes on Yemeni infrastructure and maritime security concerns near the Bab al-Mandab Strait.
