Yemen military escalation: Houthis advance toward Bab el-Mandeb

Yemen is experiencing a major military escalation as Houthi rebels launch a massive ground offensive along the western Red Sea coast and around Taiz. The fighting, described as some of the fiercest in years, involves Houthi attempts to seize control of strategic routes near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and cut off supply lines to the government-held port of Mokha.

Casualty reports vary, with some sources indicating at least 90 deaths and others reporting over 120 fatalities since the hostilities intensified on Thursday. Reports from the Maqbanah district noted the arrival of 242 Houthi bodies at a local hospital, including several field commanders. Additionally, a bombing in Al-Jawf reportedly killed four Iranian and Lebanese experts.

The humanitarian impact is severe. The United Nations reported that approximately 1,790 families have been displaced from Taiz over a two-day period. Other reports indicate that 1,395 families have fled areas in both Taiz and Hodeidah. Displacement is being exacerbated by continuous shelling, communication outages, and the depletion of emergency food and shelter stocks.
