Houthi missile attacks target Saudi oil tankers in Red Sea

The Yemen‑based Houthi movement said it launched ballistic missiles at Saudi oil tankers in the Red Sea. On 5 August a missile struck the tanker identified as "Wafa" near Yanbu, and on 6 August a second missile hit a vessel named "Daisy" in Aden Bay. The attacks are presented as retaliation for the Saudi‑imposed maritime blockade on Houthi‑controlled areas.

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations reported a loud explosion near the tanker in Aden Bay, confirming that the crew were safe. Houthi spokesperson Yahya Sareya claimed responsibility and warned that the campaign against Saudi‑linked ships will intensify. The incidents have drawn condemnation from India after an Indian commercial vessel was also reportedly targeted in the Red Sea.

These missile strikes heighten tensions over one of the world’s key maritime trade routes and raise concerns about the safety of commercial shipping in the region.
