Houthi rebels seize Mokha and expand control near Bab al-Mandeb

Fighting between Houthi rebels and pro-Saudi Yemeni government forces has intensified, leading to significant casualties and strategic shifts along the Red Sea coast. The World Health Organization reports over 800 deaths since the resumption of hostilities.

Houthi forces have made notable territorial gains, seizing the port city of Mokha and Perim Island. This expansion allows the group to increase maritime surveillance and smuggling capabilities near the strategic Bab al-Mandeb strait, threatening international shipping lanes. The group has also declared a blockade of Saudi shipping.

In response, the Yemen army reported conducting 414 attacks on Houthi targets across multiple fronts in a 24-hour period to target reinforcements and military capabilities. Conversely, Houthi forces claimed that Saudi Arabian fighter jets conducted 26 airstrikes on Yemen within a single day. The Yemen government also reported conducting 761 strikes against Houthi targets over a 72-hour period, claiming to have killed four Iranian experts involved in drone and missile operations.

The conflict has caused economic disruptions, with Kpler data indicating that Saudi oil exports to Asia fell sharply from approximately 3.4 million barrels per day in June to 128,000 barrels per day in August, before seeing a partial recovery.
