Taiz faces humanitarian crisis amid Houthi siege in Yemen

The city of Taiz in Yemen is facing a severe humanitarian crisis as Houthi rebels intensify a siege that has cut off essential supplies. The European Union has called on the Houthi group to lift the blockade and allow the entry of food, water, medicine, and fuel to the city's residents.

Prime Minister Shaie Mohsen al-Zindani has characterized the siege and the targeting of civilians as a “war crime.” Local reports indicate that food prices have risen by approximately 50 percent, while fuel costs have surged threefold. Wheat and flour stocks are critically low and could be exhausted in less than three weeks.

Health services are in a state of collapse. Only five of the 27 hospitals providing emergency services for mothers and newborns in Taiz remain partially operational. Additionally, the World Health Organization has noted a sharp increase in suspected cholera cases, with one-quarter of the 8,000 reported cases occurring in the last four weeks.

Humanitarian organizations, including the World Food Programme, warn that aid cannot reach over 600,000 people in the region who rely on assistance. The ongoing military escalation has also made many areas inaccessible to aid workers, further complicating relief efforts.
